School Security Officer

Summary  

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the School Safety Officer will be responsible for enhancing school safety and security. They will collaborate with building administrators and other school staff to ensure that only authorized individuals have access to the buildings, that security and safety procedures are followed, and that Board policies related to security, safety, and conduct are upheld. It's important to note that the employee will not have law enforcement powers in relation to local, state, and federal laws.

Key Responsibilities

The School Safety Officer will work to improve school safety and security,

  • Working with the security guards, building administrators and other school employees will assume duties and responsibilities that will ensure that access to buildings is limited to authorized individuals that build security and safety procedures are followed, and Board Policies are adhered to as related to security, safety, and conduct
  • The employee will not have law enforcement powers concerning local, state, and federal laws
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Observe situations and determine an effective course of action
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Employee must provide their service weapon and ammunition
  • Shall comply with all Missouri Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board policies and procedures related to the use of deadly force
  • Monitor and screen access to school grounds and facilities, which will include the engagement of any unknown persons on school grounds
  • Regularly patrol school perimeter and facility which will include security checks of the school site including playgrounds and parking areas, as well as security checks of school outbuildings and the the school itself, ensuring that access is limited to approved and specified areas or points
  • Supervise student, adult, and community events/activities (as assigned) to insure compliance with school safety and security procedures and Board Policy with a responsibility to report any suspicious or questionable activity or conduct to appropriate personnel (school administrator, police, etc.) and intervene when and where immediate action is necessary
  • Monitor the entire school site (school building and grounds) noting any abandoned or unclaimed packages, property, and either determine the owner of the item, return the item to the school office, or report items that are deemed to be suspicious or dangerous to the appropriate supervisor for further investigation
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Responsible for supervising students and other individuals (including non-employee adults) who have gained authorized or unauthorized access to facilities
  • Employees will assist with the evacuation of individuals.

Technology Skills 

Competence in Microsoft Office applications and ability to use a variety of computer applications and platforms. Ability to use basic office equipment. Knowledge and experience in using a computer-based student Information Management system.

Safety Duties & Responsibilities 

Every employee of the school has an obligation to know our safety rules and procedures; to teach what they know to others; to recognize unsafe actions and situations; to warn others of unsafe situations; to react to emergency situations and to report hazardous or unsafe practices to those in a position to correct them.

  •  Crowd control procedures and the detection and identification of dangerous drugs and improper substances

Qualifications and Requirements 

  • Graduate of Basic Law Enforcement Training program and passed the Peace Officer License Exam; has no criminal history, Required
  •  Possess effective writing and oral communication skills.
  •  Desire to assist in maintaining and enhancing cooperative relationships between Kairos Academies and the community.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  •  High School Graduation or GED
  • 3 years; experience in safety or security, preferred
  •  State Issued Driver’s License
  •  Experience working with students is preferred
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training Center and Peace Officer License Exam; has no criminal history .

Schedule:

  • 4-6 Hour Flexible Shift Schedule: 7 a.m.-12 a.m., 12 a.m.-4:30 pm
  • Shifts may be available during the weekend with after school activities

  • Saint Louis, MO 63118: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required). Please note, this is not a remote position. All Kairos teachers are required to deliver in-person instruction onsite, in our school in St. Louis.
